1) мор. подходить с наветренной стороны With the wind blowing strongly behind, the little boat bore down (up) on the harbour. ≈ Ветер дул прямо сзади, и маленькая лодка устремилась к гавани.
2) угрожающе близко подходить к кому-л., чему-л. The packed ice bore down (up) on the ship. ≈ Паковый лед оказался угрожающе близко от корабля.
3) тяготить, давить The responsibility for his family bears down (up) on a young man. ≈ Ответственность за семью угнетает этого юношу.
4) строго наказывать кого-л. The courts must bear down (up) on young criminals. ≈ Суды должны строго наказывать малолетних преступников.
